Out of Denarau

Every good Fijian day starts on a Denarau jetty.

The boats leave the marina between eight and nine and come back at four. Three kinds of day on the water, what it costs to get on each one, and how far out it takes you.

Nadi

Nadi is more than the runway you landed on.

Everything in Nadi →
★★★★★★★★★★4.5· 478 travellers on the busiest tour in town

The town sits ten minutes from the airport, with the biggest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere at one end and hot springs in the hills behind it. Most people write the place off and drive straight to Denarau. These three are the reason not to.

The welcome

A village, and the kava that comes with it

5-8h· from $75· bring a sulu

You are received before you are shown anything. The kava bowl comes out, somebody speaks for the group, and only then does anyone walk you to the river or the waterfall. Wear something over your knees and shoulders.

The half day

Sri Siva Subramaniya, and the hills behind it

3-4h· from $75· shoes off

The temple is the loudest colour in Nadi and takes twenty minutes to walk. Most tours pin it to the hot springs and the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, which is what makes it a morning rather than a stop.

The messy one

Mud first, then three hot pools

3-5h· from $70· old swimwear

Grey mud first, then three hot pools to rinse it off in, each one hotter than the last. It is a genuinely good soak and everybody comes out looking the same. Do not wear anything you like.

Landing at Nadi

Nadi Airport to your resort, and what the drive really costs.

Denarau is twenty minutes. The Coral Coast is closer to two hours, Suva is four, and the last leg of some resort transfers is a boat that only runs in daylight. Book the car before you fly and none of that is your problem at one in the morning.

Which coast to sleep on

Nadi and Denarau, the Coral Coast, or Suva if you want a city.

Almost everything bookable in Fiji sits on the western side of Viti Levu, within a couple of hours of the airport. Three bases, and the best days out from each.

What it costs

What a day out in Fiji actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Fiji has a reputation for being expensive and the boat days earn it, but plenty of the good mornings come in under the price of a resort lunch.

$50-150

The standard full day: island cruises, village and waterfall trips, mud pools, jet boats.

$150 and up

Private drivers for the day, the far islands, and the once-a-trip splurges that earn it.

Only here

Three Fijian days you cannot have anywhere else.

Beaches and buffets exist everywhere. A hot mud pool in a sugarcane valley, an orchid garden a Hollywood actor planted, and the biggest beach club in the South Pacific do not.

Inland from Nadi

The mud pools and hot springs

Twenty minutes inland from Nadi the ground runs hot. You wade into grey clay, plaster it on, stand about in the sun until it cracks, then work through three pools that get hotter as you go. Local families use them at the weekend and the whole thing costs less than a cocktail on Denarau.

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Raymond Burr bought the land in the seventies to keep his orchids somewhere warm, and the collection is still there under the ridge that gives the garden its name. Boardwalks run through the jungle, there is a lily pond at the top, and it takes about an hour. Most tours pair it with the mud pools next door.

The Mamanucas

Malamala Beach Club

An entire small island turned into one beach club, twenty-five minutes by catamaran off Denarau. There is a pool set into the sand, a long bar, loungers under thatch, and no village or resort to share it with. Day passes only, and the last boat back is the last boat back.

Sort this before you fly

Four Fijian bookings that do not wait for you.

Most of this island can be sorted from a hotel desk the night before. These four cannot. Every one of them sits offshore, reached by one operator boat, on a timetable set long before your flight landed.

  1. 01Day Trip to Cloud 9 Floating Platform Including Food and BeveragesA floating platform moored out in the Mamanuca reef. The only way onto it is the operator boat, which leaves the marina once in the morning.
  2. 02Malamala Beach Club – Full DayDay passes only, on a fixed catamaran timetable, with a cap on how many people are on the island at once.
  3. 03Seventh Heaven Fiji 6 Hour Experience on a Floating PlatformAnother moored platform with its own boat and its own departure time. Miss it and there is no second run.
  4. 04Full Day South Sea Island with Lunch & DrinksA small island with one jetty and one scheduled crossing. The day is built around the boat, not the other way round.
